R A & M D Butler were a husband and wife team.
Mr R A Butler was born in Ashford Hill in 1919 and subsequently worked with his father felling trees using axes and hand saws.
During World War 2 he served in the Royal Berks Regiment. Although he was in the reserved occupation as a timber feller, he volunteered and served in Italy and Palestine.
After the war in 1948 he married and settled in Ashford Hill continuing to work with his father felling trees by hand until arround the late 1950's when he bought his first chainsaw, a Danarm. Once Ray and his father had got used to the new way of doing the felling he also had a Husqvarna chainsaw.
Ray's wife Muriel started a retail business around this time, selling Danarm and Husqvarna chainsaws and oregon chain. They moved to the present site during this era. The business has grown from these early days to embracing other brand names Stihl, Tanaka, Jonsered, Efco etc. Also as the innovations came on stream they began selling brushcutters, hedgecutters, blowers and tillers.
Lawnmowers have been a part of the picture since the 1960's with both Stiga and Mountfield brands which continue today. R A Butler died in 2010, and the business continues to be run by two sons Clifford, Nigel a daughter Maureen.
